About Valley of Flowers

Valley of Flowers is famous for its meadows of alpine flowers, outstanding natural beauty, richly diverse wildlife and variety of flora. It was declared a national park in 1982 and was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2005.

More than a mere national park, valley of flower is a prominent trek too, and that is why a varied of travel lovers can head to this spot. In comparison to other popular treks situated at the same heights, valley of flowers requires lesser energy. The trek starts from Govindghat. In Ghangaria, the trek gets deviated with one route approaching towards Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib and another route going towards the valley of flowers.

Valley of Flowers Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 - Govindghat - Ghangaria

Govind Ghat, is a small place close to Joshimath (around 1 hour distance), where the trek begins. From Govind Ghat, a trek of 14km bring trekkers to the Ghangaria, a small settlement located about 3km from the valley. The entire trail to Ghangaria winds along the river with cascading waterfalls and natural water springs, which present a very refreshing sight. It is a beautiful trek route with magnificent views and river accompanying you throughout. 

Day 2 - Ghangaria - Valley of Flower - Ghangaria

Start early to have more time at hand when you are in the valley. The Pushpawati river flows along most part of the trek and the entry to the valley is dramatic; there are exotic flowers all through the trail but at one point when you actually enter the valley, you are mesmerized with unending views of the flower beds. The place is nothing short of a fairy land and if you start early, you can spend the whole day clicking, meditating and relaxing. Evening arrive at Ghangaria and check into the hotel for overnight stay.

Day 3 - Ghangaria- Govind Ghat- Joshimath

After breakfast trek down to Govind Ghat. Start early in the morning from Ghangaria and reach Govinghat. On arrival at Govinghat, drive to Joshimath. After arriving at Joshimath you can carry on with your further travel to Haridwar or Kedarnath or Badrinath.

There are number of essentials you must carry with yourself. Climate over the top are unpredictable, so you need to be ready for every weather. Below are some of the most essential things to carry for your trek to Valley of Flowers National park.


Raincoat/ Poncho : Valley of Flower is a monsoon trek, therefore raincoats are must.

Shirts/ T- shirts, Water resistant trekking Pants, Woollen sweater, Cap, Hat, Scarf, Muffler, Gloves, & Socks.

Jacket : Fleeced jacket instead of woollen is an excellent option for the monsoon season in Himalayas. It provides good insulation, is light weight and dries easily.

Shoes,Sturdy walking stick/ Trekking pole , Water Bottle

Torch/ flashlight/ Camera : Electricity is not available, so carry extra batteries.

Towel, Personal toiletries, Cold cream/sunscreen lotion/Lip balm

Entry Fees & Permissions


Entry Fee : The entry fee is separate for Indian Nationals and foreigners. The entry fee to the beautiful Valley of Flowers is Rs. 650 for foreigners and Rs.150 for tourists of Indian descent. This entry ticket is valid for only 3 days, if one wishes to extend his/her trip, he/she needs to be pay an additional sum of Rs. 50 per each extra day for Indian and Rs.250 for foreigners.

Camera Fee : Carrying a still camera is free. Taking a non-professional video camera is also free. However, Indians need to pay Rs.500 and foreigners Rs. 1500 for taking in a professional video camera.

Filming Charges : There are charges for making a feature film or documentary film; Indians need to pay Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 10,000 per day and foreigners Rs. 200,000 and Rs. 30,000 per day respectively.

Permission : There is a forest department check point in Ghangaria, which marks the official beginning of the Valley of Flowers. This is where you pay the money and obtain your permit.

Timings: The valley of flowers is open throughout the day from 8:00am to 5:00pm and camping is prohibited. The last entry to the park is 2:00pm.

How to Reach Valley of Flowers

How to Reach Valley of Flowers


Valley of Flower is located near Badrinath in Chamoli district, Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state in India. Delhi is a good base to reach there. The rest of the journey is best undertaken by road.


By Air : The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, 319km. From the airport there are cabs and private taxis available till Joshimath. From here you need to trek for 17km to reach valley of flowers.

By Rail : The nearest railway station is Haridwar and Rishikesh. The last rail head is Rishikesh but no express train goes to Rishikesh so the rail head becomes Haridwar. One needs to start the road journey from Haridwar early in the morning so as to complete the total motorable part of the journey in a day. There are buses and taxis are available to reach Govindghat, which is the base for trek to reach valley of flowers.

By Road : Bus Services are available till Govindghat & you need to trek 14kms to reach Ghangaria. Jeeps are available further 5km to Pulna Village. The valley is a 3km climb from Ghangaria, which has to be made on foot.

Best Times to Visit Valley of Flowers


Best time to visit valley of flowers is just after the monsoon outbreak. As snow starts melting by the end of May, new plants start germinating which results in flowers blooming by mid July. Valley of Flowers blooms to its youth from mid July till end of August. So, the best to visit the valley of flowers is in the month of July & August.Valley of Flower is snow clad for most of the year & opens only in the monsoon season.


Valley of Flowers in Winter : During winter valley of flower remains officially closed and visitors are not allowed. Due to snowfall the valley becomes inaccessible.

Valley of Flowers in Summer : This time (June and July) Valley of flowers have a cool weather with maximum temperature reaches to nearly 17◦C and is good season for viewing the panoramic beauty.

Valley of Flower in Monsoon : During monsoon the weather is unpredictable & valley presents a different look each day when it becomes accessible from June to September.. But enough visitors come to valley of flowers in this season.
